With my gravelly soil, drought stress is also a chronic problem here.
How about a combination of drought and cold injury? Depending on stage
of development, cold damages the ability of the stem to conduct moisture
needed for growth? Maybe sometimes buds are hit, sometimes stems,
depending on cultivar and timing of events.
Miniaturized stalks and blooms is a more typical response to drought
stress here, but I will try to pay more attention to the shriveled stems
& see if they occur more often on cultivars that <don't> produce
miniaturized stalks and blooms. Possibly different strategies/responses
for different cultivars, and if it is, that's something I'd like to be
aware of when making crosses.
Any of you have shriveled stems and blasted buds available now to see if
they are on the same cultivars or if a particular cultivar consistently
has one or the other?
