If any are to be saved, each clump has to be examined stalk by
stalk, cutting out the borer, if possible without digging up the rhizome,
then thoroughly dousing the cut/gouged areas with bleach, then liberally
sprinkling Comet cleanser over the base of the whole clump. If necessary,
cut off and dig out any rhizomes containing borers, evict and terminate the
occupant with extreme prejudice, scrape the area he has occupied, cleanse
the rhizomes by dipping them in a 15% bleach solution for about 5 minutes,
then rinse and replant
Thanks, Griff. I think the thing to do is to try to kill some of them in
situ and plan on digging and dividing as soon as the systemic has been given a
chance to work. The argument for waiting until they hit the rhizomes is that
one knows where they are, and some will have eaten the others, but then, I
understand, one has maximum damage, maximum ickiness, and greatest potential for
rot. I expect all methods will need to be deployed in turn. I intend to
supervise as I am about at the end of my tether with regards to fecklessness
abounding in the world of irises, daddio.
