HYB:CULT: I got agouti

While evaluating 03-9-3 I noticed that the plain jane purple seedling had bit of blue at the base near the tip of her otherwise goldenrod colored beard.  I'm kind of bored with this seedling so I wandered over to her nearest parent JESSE'S SONG wondering if this blue base was from JESSE or from REBOUND.  
   
  Poor Jesse is on her last bloom, and so instead of getting down in the dirt to look I just popped the fall off and brought the beard up to eye level. JESSE's beard hairs have a white base, a distinct blue line, and white tips.  In my head I said 'oh, agouti' I suppose I could just as easily have said it was tabby like a cat.  I wandered around the beds examining any beard I could get my hands on for this agouti type striping of the individual beard hairs.  I found several cultivars with these striped hairs: brown stripes on blue hairs, on orange hairs, yellow stripes.  FASHIONABLY LATE has a raspberry stripe on otherwise tangerine beard hairs.  Interestingly that was the only tangerine beard with a clear agouti stripe (I am assuming that there must be stripes there, but that the colors are so close together that I just couldn't tell with the naked eye). Some cvs even have layers of stripes topped off with ticking on the tips.  
   
  So, now I wanna know about this agouti trait.  I know a few breeders have worked with beard colors...like tangerine, or pink beards on blue iris...but has anyone noticed this striping before?  Is it possible that carefull evaluation of the agout patterns in a beard might reveal hidden genetic traits like how many t's in a tangerine?
