[irises]HYB:Update
Thought I would update a couple of things.
Frozen pollen: None of my fall crosses 2005 would take so I froze pollen.
First I put some powdered milk in a gallon zip lock bag and placed the bag in
the freezer. (Per Colleen)
As fall bloom season progressed I put several envelopes containing pollen
into the gallon bag. The pollen did not rest on the powered milk. I dried the
anthers about 2 hours each before I placed them in the envelopes and then
into the bag.
When the pink/purple seedling bloomed I was out of worthy pollen in the
garden. I commented on here that I didn't think the freezer pollen (Renown) was
any good because it didn't 'feel' right. I 'feel' all of my pollen and
thought I'd developed a good sense for good and not so good. Made the cross
anyway! And it took! Another cross with the same pollen did not take, but it was
from a different envelope. Probably harvested at a different time.
Anyway, I'm happy that it worked!
I did a decent job of writing down weather and flower conditions this
spring. Many of the flowers I'd marked as "too dry" also took. These showed no
moisture in the stigma and with the constant wind I have this year, I didn't
expect much! Never give up!
Have way too many takes this year!!!
