RE: iris change colour over time?

Suzanne

As a commercial grower I've heard this one lots, and I've investigated every
one that I could. Results so far, not a single proven case.
Causes found so far
Wrong item originally supplied, ie Wedding Vow, instead of a peach.
Rampant white iris, out-growing all else.
White ones flowering earlier than others, and complaint made before the end
of the season, before the others have had a chance to flower
Glyphosate damage.

I'm sure there are a few other causes, but never-ever have I found one to
actually change colour except for a transient chimera, which reverted to
original colour next year, usually with a chimera there is change to part of
the flower only.

Subject: [iris] iris change color over time?

I have been told by older gardeners in my area that iris will change
color - usually to white - if several varieties are grown in the same
bed. I don't believe this. Personally I think the most hardy variety
will eventually take over the bed as the lesser hardy varieties die out.

But I need to know if I am right or wrong and I need to be able to back
up my answer - one way or another!

I'd appreciate any information.
