Cyclic rebloomer is a description of behaviour , not a genotype. That is it periodically reblooms, but not consistently. So it sometimes receives environmental conditions at right period of growth to enable it's genotype to respond. It is the genotype that you need to be addressing for breeding purposes.
So could be a number of different things. One possibility is delayed bloom resulting from increase (which later reblooms) . This can result from the increase being large enough so that when mother plant blooms, the vernalization reset biochemical signal is not strong enough to reset the increase. (signal goes from mother plant to increases) This can be enhanced through appropriate cross, but is different genetically then summer and Fall cyclic genetics. This appears to be what we have with the "whenever" rebloomers. Best route to go for everbloomers. But if this it will enhance Fall Cyclic rebloom if crossed to a FC rebloomer. But nothing will result friom a cross with summer rebloomers.
But it could also be either summer or fall cyclic genetically, with problems getting signal.growth triggers in sync.
Some detective work needed. The timing of fall rebloom seems to vary with the climate. It blooms in the summer (repeat) for me. When crossed onto 'Radiant Bliss' it gave the same patterns (both.) Interesting. So would you now categorize SUMMER R a hot weather/"summer"/early fall rebloomer, late fall cycle, or slightly confused CA ever/here winter bloomer? Maybe I will dig out those seeds from a couple of years ago from this repeat pink, esp since this year is such a dud. Can't remember what the crosses were, but will give them a shot if any of them had rebloom background. Will try asking again this winter, see if we get more input.
Linda, I've used 'Summer Radiance' in a lot of crosses and it has
produced many rebloomers, mostly fall bloomers. The honey colored seedling that I posted last summer is from SR and it started rebloom in early July.
For years, I thought it was repeat only. Time has revealed that
'Summer Radiance' has also bloomed in the fall for many people.
I've not had any luck with other irises that appear to be repeat
bloomers here.
