Holly,
There are probably as many different labeling systems as there are
people
doing it. All of my beds are bordered with landscape timbers so I use
6" long
mini blind pieces as the base. I print all the info I want on to a
clear laser
label, make sure it's a laser label as ink jet washes off. Then
I stick
the printed label to the mini blind and screw it down to the timber.
We used to
use the metal labels from Paw-Paw Everlast label company and had
very good luck
with them. One thing to think about if you use a pen or
marker is that most
will fade, so put the name on the bottom and the top.
That way when one half
fades the other is still legible. Some people bury
half their labels in the
ground, again, lable both halves so that the
protected half will still be
legible when the top fades. One last thing, map
your beds. Using pen and paper
(or a computer program) diagram your bed and
mark where you plant each iris.
Then, when some helpful spouse, child, or
gardener, moves your name tags while
weeding or playing, you can put them all
back using your map.

Welcome to the group and good luck!

Subject: [iris] Plant labels

Hello all!

I'm new to the list. I'm
beginning to buy different iris cultivars and
want to make sure I keep them
straight once planted. I'm toying with the
idea of playing with hybridizing
in the future, so keeping my iris labeled
is important.

My question tonight
is what labels and pens are everyone using to label
their plants in the field?
Thanks in advance!
