OT-PLANTS-Jacobean Lily

Walter, who sounds like he has a gawjus garden, asked:

"My first Jacobian lily is in bloom. Is red the only color available?"

I am wildly fond of Jacobean Lilies--also known as St. James Lily, Aztec
Lily, and Orchid Amaryllis--known botanically as Sprekelia formosissima, of
the Amaryllis family. My beat up Hortus Third, confirmed by my beat up
Wyman's Encyclopedia, says only bright red, although there is some indication
the tone may vary slightly. Hortus says there is a cultivar listed as
'Superba', but there is only the one species.

These are splendidly beautiful things.
