Greetings,
I thought it was interesting that Dave Niswonger mentioned CORAL STRAND in
his biographical essay. I hope he is proud of this early introduction,
because it is a good plant. I got my start as an extra in an order, and, like
so many things that have come in as gifts, it is a very strong grower. Mine
didn't bloom its first year, but it increased very well and the following
year it sent up several well branched stalks which showed ruffled blooms
with warm rosy beige falls and near white standards. Deep in the heart are a
few sly mauve freckles. It bloomed so long I wearied of it. I divided the
clump and reset it, giving some away. I had one double nosed rhizome left
over and in desperation potted it up, thinking to find it a home before fall.
None materialized, so I tucked it up under the magnolia tree under the
Christmas tree limbs with the other potted irises to ride out the winter and
this spring it cranked into gear. It is on the patio, still in its 12" pot,
with two good stalks, normal height, one with two wide branches and a spur.
No goosenecking, no snapped stem, no aborted buds, no frost damage, no rot,
and two increases. Also, it is pretty!
