It was a brief excerpt -- and I'm sorry if it gave the wrong impression out of
context. I did find supportive evidence in the details.
The pumila hybrids Sass wrote about were not selections of the pure pumila
species, but multi-species hybrids of which pumila was considered a major
component. Their TB foundation stock was also quite varied and even with
incomplete pedigrees there's ample evidence of multi-species origin. In each
case -- exactly the situation in which heterosis could work to their advantage.
Of course there's a chasm to cross between "could" and "did". What actually
happened in the Sass seedling patch is probably beyond our ability to prove or
disprove....
