In my arid climate, I continue to water the arilbreds along with the
bearded irises. (I do withhold water from the pure arils.) Very few go
completely dormant. They don't *require* as much water as the beardeds, so
if you are conserving water, you can grow them in a separate bed and water
less often. I'm presuming that you water in furrows or with drip or soaker
system so that the rhizomes and fan bases don't get sprinkled on.
I can't be sure, but my impression from communicating with members of the
Aril Society is that in the southwest US (including California), arilbreds
will do just fine with the same culture given to TBs. Outside that region,
where nature itself provides more water than either ABs or TBs need, the
ABs require special attention.
