Escholtzia (Calif. poppies) and violas are spring bloomers here.  I'd
have to have something to take our vicious hot summer with little
irrigation.  Melampodium would be ideal, but you're right, invasive.
Zinnias *might* work; they *do* self seed but the seedlings are so large
that they could be pulled easily and they don't show up until well into
iris bloom.  Four-o-clocks might also work; some of the less invasive
salvias (*don't* use farinacea!!!) might also do.
