It has been an odd Spring here, too - and not very "iris friendly", either.
April was a lot colder than it should have been and since May 3 it has been
like summer - hot and dry - with record temperatures the last two days. The
medians have been straggling into bloom here until today when over a dozen
opened all together - SDBs, IBs and MTBs. Most have had shorter than normal
stalks, except PIPPI LONGSTOCKINGS, which usually blooms at the upper end
of its class (14-15") and this year came in at 18", and CALLING CARD, which
bloomed out of class at 29" last year (the first year it bloomed for me)
and again this year at 28".
The best looking medians here so far this year have been the IBs. BRIGHTEN
UP, LET'S ELOPE, RASPBERRY BLUSH, and SEASON TICKET really stand out - each
one of these has eye catching color and is a good performer, too. The
head-of-the-class, though, is CEE JAY, which is a really sharp blue-violet
and white plicata with a flower that is just about the ideal for an IB,
pert and crisp, with near perfection of form, proportion and substance!
