There are LOTS of high quality places that sell irises that are "not in
Oregon". As with everything, you should not choose your irises solely on the
basis of price - but some things you may consider...
1. Selection: I think it's more trouble than it's worth to have to order
from 8 different catalogs in order to get the lowest prices on every iris
that you want.
2. Reputation: Check with people you respect about the vendor you are
considering for an opinion on the quality and service they provide. Don't
just ask one person..
3. Catalog: pictures and postage cost LOTS of money... which drives up some
prices. So if you're looking for lowest price - don't necessarily expect it
from the people with the beautiful catalogs - BUT if you're knew to irises...
you may need those 'girlie pictures' to see what the irises look like (folks
like me get a MUCH better picture in their mind).
4. Climate and season: It's always good to try to match up your approximate
season and climate when choosing a vendor - lessens the tragedies
5. For heaven's sake DON'T buy a bag o' iris from Wal*Mart. Maybe the best
price.... but there's NO TELLING what's in there.
