I have blue flax in the iris beds, and sure enough, I have to pull out many,
many flaxlets (actually I pot up many of them for our iris and perennial sale
in August). But--they are so carefree, airy and delightfully blue that I'm
willing to do it, to keep a constant supply coming. They also bloom over a
long period--another plus, since my iris beds are leaves only most of the
season. And, the foliage is not overwhelming and sun-blocking as many other
"companions" can be.
