Re: REF: Hortus III

Greetings,

HORTUS III, which is the successor to HORTUS II, itself a successor to
HORTUS, is a large reference book ("A Concise Dictionary of Plants Cultivated
in The United States and Canada") published by the Staff of the Liberty Hyde
Bailey Hortorium at Cornell University. It is nearly 1300 pages long and,
while not as comprehensive nor as authoritative as the newly revised Royal
Horticultural Society multi-volume horticultural encyclopedia, is a useful
and venerable reference book. The copyright date, however, is 1976, and I am
reliably informed by some professional horticulturalists and taxonomists that
it is pretty outdated on some things. I own HORTUS III, and I use it often,
especially in conjunction with WYMAN"S GARDEN ENCYCLOPEDIA, which is another
excellent book, recently revised. I think anyone interested in horticulture
would thoroughly enjoy having a HORTUS, especially at a such a modest price,
and most of us will not notice the superceded data, but we need to remember
that some information may be stale.
