Re: SPEC/REF: BIS species book--mini-review II

Dear Nancy,

You asked:
<<... what is "Mathew's book"? Are any of these the HORTUS III book that
has been discussed? >>

No, HORTUS III is a general gardening encyclopedia. The book Tom and I
mentioned is one by the British botanist Brian Mathew called THE IRIS. This
book discusses the naturally occurring species within the genus Iris and has
been the standard modern reference since the 'eighties. The Species Iris
Group of North America, which is one of the special interest groups
associated with the American Iris Society, has, until now, used this as a
handbook. It remains to be seen whether it will still do so in light of the
new publication on the subject by Cambridge University Press for the Species
Group of the British Iris Society---the book we have just been discussing.

Mathew's book is available in a reprint edition from Timber Press in Portland
Oregon. They have a webpage with on-line ordering. [ www.timber-press.com/]
Search by author. You may encounter other editions of this book. There was
the first edition, and a revised edition issued by the original British
publisher and its American affiliate, and now the book has been reprinted by
Timber Press. Any edition you find will serve you well. If you are interested
in books on the subject you might wish to check out the extensive and very
valuable bibliography on The Home Page for Irises
[http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~`djoyce/iris/].

You may also enjoy browsing the Iris-l archives for discussions of iris books
recommended for beginners. There have been several discussions of the subject
in the not too distant past.
