A frost pocket is a spot that experiences freezing temperatures when the
surrounding area does not. As cold air is denser (heavier) than warm air,
it tends to settle into low lying spots, especially when there is little or
no wind to keep it moving. 

The mountain valley where I live is like a big bowl, and when temperatures
are low and there is no wind, the bottom of the bowl (the center of the
valley) can have temperatures 20 degrees or more below those experienced on
the sides (I live on one of the sides).
