Hi Lane... your post was rich with information - and I thought I'd answer to
the list in case anyone should find my responses of some value.
First of all... congratulations on coming out of the lurker closet! There
are lots of folks on this list (ve know who you are!) who read and hope their
questions are answered, but havn't yet stepped up to the plate. Doesn't
help, I suppose, when tempers flare. But we all have something to learn, and
we learn by asking. So welcome and I hope you'll be an ongoing contributor.
I think many of us have a patch of 'grandma's iris' as you do. My patch is
of an early purple with the sweetest fragrance imaginable. I remember
building May alters as a girl with lilacs and iris and each one offered their
own special fragrance. My grandma's iris follow me everywhere... a way of
keeping her alive and close. One day I was startled to have a photographer
stop by my house to confess that she had been taking photos in my yard for
years. She showed me her album... and there were grandma's iris! (Isn't it
tragic that we can recognize our flowers???). Anyway, I bought a copy of
that picture - the artist titled it "My Grandma's Iris", as I requested...
and I had it framed and sent to my mom in Florida who can't grow iris... but
can still keep her Mom close that way.
As for starting a club in Moscow... as a person who founded a local daylily
club, I can offer that the best way to go about it (IMHO) is to 'run it up
the flagpole and see who salutes'. That is, find a way to attract people
(Open Garden? Iris Display?), and put out a signup sheet. Then bake some
cookies and call a 'meeting'.
(not quite that easy, but you get the idea.... no brain surgery here)
So, Lane.... welcome and I hope I haven't put you off with my morning
chattiness.
