Here in CA I let my Spurias go totally dormant over the summer. They
are trying to do this now as we have had an early season. Usually in
June I let them go totally brown and cut the foilage, stalks and all a
few inches from the ground. It's amazing to see nothing where once
foilage was up to 6 feet high. And more amazing to know that they will
be like that once again next spring.
If your culture is to keep them green, then I would suggest to cut your
stalks as you do your tall beardeds. Probably a few inches from the
ground. This will keep out the volunteers and make your clumps much
neater.
