Re: what to do with seed

Yet again, I read the advice that iris seeds should be chilled but
definitely not frozen. This seems odd as the natural habitat of most
irises are areas where the seed would freeze in winter. In fact, some
of the species come from area of extraordinary cold. In Ottawa, I have
considerable success with germinating seeds out doors where they are
exposed to temperatures that approaches to -40F (I seem to remember the
coldest was -37C). This usually occurs when the seeds are under the
snow but, although that is some protection, the seeds are still exposed
to very cold condition, certainly well below freezing. I might also
note that all my plants seems to have survived the winter very well this
year are they were all outside at very low temperatures, although this
year we probably did not get below -30C.
