Sounds like carpenter ants which are rampant around here and
they never touch the plants. They don't eat wood but rather tunnel
to make their nests and 'dump' the sawdust on the ground.

Dursban is the poison 'of choice' that exterminators use to
wipe out carpenter ants....I have no idea what caused your
plants to be injured and die. -(
