Audrey,

This is a condition that happens from not enough moisture in the ground.
If you remember we did not get any rain after January (or any to speak
of) this year.  So irrigation was in order from February til now.  Iris
need moist soil prior to bloom and if allowed to dry out the buds will
suffer.
