In my experience, the "marking" of FOLIAGE which is caused by viruses could
not be confused with variegated foliage. Viruses can cause some light
streaks in leaves but true variegation is quite different. I believe that
we can be quite confident that "variegated" foliage is the result of a
mutation and has nothing to do with any known virus.

I think the confusion may be with the color breaking viruses which cause
streaky colors in the flower. These are virus caused and can be removed by
tissue culture and perhaps by careful heat treatment.
