I would suspect that what you got (if it's really native and beardless) is
Iris versicolor.  You don't mention the color of the blooms--maybe it has
not yet bloomed.  Versicolor is usually some shade of blue or violet.

They like it damp, with organic soil, but can do fine in an ordinary garden
bed and little attention to watering during dry spells.  Where they do well
they are almost unkillable.

As for the douglasiana seedlings, your plan sounds about right, but I would
not have hopes of them making it through a Vermont winter!
