bloom report

From: Linda Mann <lmann@icx.net>

Today is the first day of my annual 2 weeks of 'nothing but iris'
vacation. Off to a chilly start at 33oF! Everything got drenched with
2 inches of badly needed rain this past Thursday. So happy to be having
a good bloom year for a change - some of these are historics, some more
recent.

Lots of TBs showing color - can hardly wait for APRICOT GIANT to open, 3
or 4 tall stalks on 2nd year plant. Some freeze damage to foliage -
this one may be fussy here & didn't even try to bloom last year.

TANYA is absolutely stunning this year - what gorgeous rich colors! And
I love the form. It was all stumpy and ratty looking last year (first
year) but this year has 3 stately very tall stalks. It is probably
going to be fussy most years here (too early) but I sure am enjoying it
this year!

NORTHWARD HO was very pretty - lots of subtle colors - I especially like
the pale yellow wash on the upper part of the falls. Too short here &
probably too early for most years here.

Tons of bloom on PERFUME COUNTER - definitely the 'workhorse' of early
TBs here -usually manages to make a few normal stalks no matter what the
weather and stalks are rarely stunted. JESSE'S SONG is a close second,
but I don't like the flower form. Spectacular clump this year.

Ellen, your PRINCE OF BURGUNDY is blooming - very pretty! A keeper.

The I. aphylla clones from Ohio are blooming. Disappointingly short and
not my cup of tea (trying to be tactful).

I'm in love with ROSY WINGS - only one bloom open so far, but it held up
well in all the rain, has tall graceful stalks, I like the form, & it's
just nice! Sharon, maybe I will get interested in your idea of stable
50n TBs yet.

ZING ME is a beautiful little flower! I got it because I love the
'umbrata'/zonal/spot pattern & it's supposed to be readily fertile, but
I like it for it's own pretty little self.

CRUZIN (or is that ORBITER?) has a couple of blooms open, also QUEEN
DOROTHY (who has NEVER bloomed here in the spring before), IMMORTALITY,
several miscellaneous rain battered variations of older blue plicatas, a
tall stalk of SECOND WIND that promptly crashed in the rain, a stumpy
stalk of ST. Petersburg, beautiful clump of WILLOW WARE about on its
last blooms, 2 stalks with blooms open on RAGING TIGER - a bright showy
thing,

PINK RUFFLES is open - not pink & not ruffled by modern ideas, but I
really like this dainty little thing.

SILVER THAW bloomed for the first time this year - 3 yr plant - lots of
stalks and a nice light blue (not quite turquoise).

GREEN AND GIFTED was almost open yesterday - lookin' a bit murky for my
taste buds, but we'll see what she looks like all the way open.

Should be a bunch of new stuff open by tomorrow.
