Re: COMP:Iris database?

From: "janet & shan" <shan@montana.net>

Two thoughts regarding Allison's Database inquiry:

1. The WINiris program that is (still, I hope) available from the folks at
Superstition Iris Gardens randrcv@sierratel.com does all the chores you
mention without having to do battle with Excel. I don't know if it's
available for the Mac OS, but if you are running "soft Windows" that would
solve that problem. We have been using the program for a couple years and it
does a great job.

2. If you are a wee bit adventurous and can get fired up in Excel (there are
usually Continuing Ed classes through local High School or College "Night
Owl" type programs, or you could grab the "Excel for Dummies" book, these
books are great if you just want to know how to do it, and not how the guts
of the software work) AND you have a basic web-site creation tool like the
one in Netscape Communicator, called "Composer" ( there are many others),
you could create the whole deal as a local "web-site". This would simply be
a folder containing your Database spread sheet in an html document (web
page) and all your pictures saved as html pages. Create links from the
spreadsheet entries to the photographs and, Voila ! You have something that
acts and looks like the Help files that open in your Browser, or the
routines on Software installation CD's, or "on-line" catalogues. This may
sound terribly complicated but it really isn't AND it's lots of fun.

I think I'm gonna have to try it, now that you've made me dream this up !!

Hope this gives folks some ideas.
