HYB: Twins
From: "Jan Clark" <janclarx@hotmail.com>
Hi all,
I recently lifted what I thought to be two TB seedlings growing side by
side, to discover that they were conjoined twins (like siamese twins). I did
not think it was possible that I had planted 2 seeds together in that
position, and presumed that these were twins growing from two seperate
embryo's in the same seed. When I tried to tease the two rz's apart there
was a little snap, and they seperated leaving a 1/4" cut surface. The rz's
are mirror images of each other.
I expect these to be identical, and presume that the embryo divided into 2,
as with identical twins, but did not completely seperate. The other
possibility is that the two fused, in the same way that a grafted bud fuses
to the host plant. Does any one know if this is a possibility?
I have left the two in the same pot, and labelled them carefully, and will
watch them closely. It will be interesting to see if they are tetraploid or
diploid.
The seedlings are from a cross of LADY FRIEND X SILKIRIM
