Well, Sterling, it is very unlikely that you will get anything with form
from AUTUMN MAPLE. Three and two years ago, I made about a bazillion
crosses with it and after this spring most of them have bloomed. Form
leaves much to be desired. However, I have saved the best and am planning
some line breeding, especially with things from SPIN AGAIN, which both
repeats and reblooms at times. I'm hoping for something really good from
that....the widest SDB seedling i bloomed this year was from (SWEET BITE X
SPIN AGAIN) Man, touching hafts..and ..................... PINK! I was
quite impressed. Until 3 years ago, I had believed my OCTOBER SPLENDOR to
be pod sterile. However, on a whim after discovering in Mass. that I loved
some of the SDBs, I was madly rushing thru the garden one afternoon and
wiped some pollen of CHANTED on one bloom. Well, it made a seed pod. Some
of those few babies germinated and one of them that bloomed last spring was
a perfect SDB size that bloomed with the early TBs. I used some pollen and
saved some pollen...well, all my pollen just in the gelatin capsules in
their dissicator in the regular fridge and so this year I have used that
seedling's pollen and much more and have gotten several takes from it...so
it doesn't have to be frozen.... that may do more damage than not.
Several new TB things continue to dazzle me, like: Misty Lady X Mother
Earth; 1 seedling managed to live and it is a true pink s./ blue f. beauty
of a flower...unfortunately, it has not plant nor much of a stalk to go with
it. Mother Earth just won't survive here! I keep trying to get pollen from
CA but their seasons are more screwed than ours! :) But JIJ did a super
job last year!
This is the best season here in years! And my little tweezers are clamping
madly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! till 0 dark 30 every night!
