While touring Tom Parkhill's garden in Knoxville, he couldn't say enough
nice things about Walter Moores' VIOLET SHIMMER (which even is blooming
for me!). I know I got chewed on for repeating things second hand once
before, but I'm untrainable so here goes again - according to Tom, this
iris is the most perfect iris he's grown.
He also had a huge clump of QUEEN OF HEARTS about to open 14 perfect
looking stalks. One of the three Q of H at my house that I experimented
on a couple of years ago by putting fresh horse poop around and on top
of the freshly planted rhizomes is also about to open (for those new to
the list, that was just an experiment to see how sensitive rhizomes
really are to fresh-outdoor horse poop (not stall manure) - 3 starts
each of PINAFORE PINK (1 died), QUEEN OF HEARTS (1 died), and BABBLING
BROOK (all died). None have grown or bloomed well & the weeds have been
out of control, but the manure itself didn't seem to cause a problem -
however, this is NOT recommended for irises).
