Well, the thing that sticks in my mind was a particularly unwholesome looking
iris toothpick dispenser, but I have also heard tell of such "artifacts" as a
handpainted iris toilet seat that played "Somewhere over the Rainbow." Can't
you just see a nasty fight breaking out over that one? Strong feelings
carried over into other areas of Society business and lasting for
years....."Oh, I could never support Ladida on anything she was promoting!
That awful woman sniped me on that darling toilet seat I wanted for the van
and then she gave it to Clarence, just trying to impress him..."
As you may have noticed, the iris was a popular design motif in a lot of
household goods in the 'twenties and 'thirties. Kitchen ware, textiles,
little china dustcatchers, handkerchiefs, novelty glassware, costume
jewelery. There were some better things made, certainly, but many of the
"iris collectibles" one encounters today were low-end when new, and they
haven't gotten any better with age and wear. Sorry to sound like a priggish
spoilsport, but this is just something I think should be kept in mind.
