How depressing. I was sitting in my living room today, listening to the
weather radio. Severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning in my
county (thank goodness it was north of me!) All the sudden the sky opened up
and the rain came out! I can live with rain and thunder and lightning. I
wasn't prepared for the hail.
A little bigger than peas. Isn't it amazing the damage a pea size chunk of
ice can do? It hailed non-stop for about 5 minutes and I don't mean a light
hail. This stuff came down just as much as the rain! When it was over I went
out side and looked at it. Below the down spout of my house was a pile of
this stuff, 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep (I measured it!). This happened
at about 3:30 and the last time I looked, at about 9:30, there was still a
large pile of ice under that down spout.
I started checking plants. My son's little tomato plant was missing a few
leaves. My Citronella plant was just a stick with all the leaves spread out
on the dirt. All my Thyme plants looked fine. Then I went to the Irises. I
noticed all the green leaves under the oak tree and wondered how in the world
so many could have been taken off. When I got to the beds, I wanted to cry. I
had probably 75 to 100 Iris in bloom this morning. There was not one single
flower that was discernible as an Iris! The beds were littered in colorful
confetti. Chunks of petals all over the dirt, tattered remains hanging from
the stalks. There were even holes thru some of the leaves! I just went back
in the house.
Do you think my husband would spring for one of those automatic pool cover
things??
