Dear iris lovers,
Hello....my name is Lynn and I am a novice grower of irises, but a long
time lover of them. I live in a small town right outside Charlotte, NC in
zone 7b. Last summer I started with a few reblooming irises, some bloomed
some did not, and I am now very interested in historics. I have already
begun preparing the bed and have ordered ~30 historics from 4 sources that
will arrive mid-summer or so. I am also anxiously awaiting the arrival of
*The Gardner's Iris Book* by Dr. William Shear and *The World of the Iris*.
I have already been able to obtain *Rainbow Fragments* by Shull and *Iris in
the Little Garden* from used book stores through www. bookfinder.com and
they are wonderful! I am here to learn all I can to be able to grow
beautiful irises. I would most especially like to hear from other growers
in my area of the South with specifics that they have learned about care and
culture in our area. I also have two large perennial beds.
Personally speaking, my husband is Phil and I have three grown children
from my first marriage...Jennifer, 24; Jamey, 21; and Parker, 18. One of my
friends told me last summer when all this 'gardening fever' took hold of me
that her mother always said that when the children leave the nest, you go to
the garden! It is certainly true with me. Phil and I have 2 dogs that are
our 'children'...an old english sheepdog and a miniature schnauzer. We
bought a house that was built in 1940 3 summers ago with a huge yard that
had never been landscaped very much in the past and we have been so busy
ever since making flower beds and generally landscaping all over the
property. Phil is a very talented designer and builder as a hobby and he
has put in brick walkways, a deck on the back, a fence around the back of
the property, plus lots of inside work. We both love and respect old things
and have tried to keep the character of the house as much as possible. He
is my helper in doing the heavy work of gardening.
I would like to thank Anner and Clarence for helping me find irises and
telling me about the books, and I am very much looking forward to getting to
know you and learning about irises.
