Sure.... you have irises! (<--- the plural of "iris")
In other words, there is more than one iris planted in your garden and they
have bloomed alternately.
Irises grow from a rhizome, or type of bulb, so they don't revert and they
don't respond dramatically to soil changes. The only explanation is that you
have a light blue iris that bloomed last year (and is making increases in
preparation for the next bloom... maybe next year) and a yellow iris. Since
an iris will not bloom again on the same rhizome, it sometimes takes a year
to build up momentum to bloom again.
