Re: SHOW: Washington Iris Club Results

From: "S&C Rust" <srust@fidnet.com>

Unfortunately, I do not have the names of all the adult winners. You may
soon have two new additions to iris-talk from our club, Carl Dennler and Bob
Koch. I think Carl would have the adult winner's list.

Best Youth Design was for "All That Jazz" and featured ting-ting sprayed
silver, a twisty willow branch sprayed silver and silver pipe cleaners
twisted into frenzied designs; iris used were Diva Do, a bright pink bi-tone
with white spray pattern, orange TBs Voleur De Feu and deep puple siberians.
This was in a green glass bowl with a rope twist design...lots of movement!

Youth Artistic Sweepstakes winner's box featured the design title "Space
Jam" and had a round oriental style container with a spout offplaced on top
and a hole in the middle. It was off white speckled black. A lego
spaceship in black with yellow and red accents was placed in front and off
to one side of it on a stand and it was slanted to match the opening of the
container; which held one gigantic bloom of Dusky Challenger.

Hats off to our lady in charge of design ideas, Theo Sprague! The kids had
great fun with these classes and the other one entitled, simply, "Blue".
The theme of the show had to do with songs.

Winner of the Adult Best Design and our silver traveling trophy, none other
than Theo Sprague with a beautiful rendition of "Yellow Bird". She had a
tall wicker cage sprayed black, a yellow bird (of course!) on the side and
smoke tree foliage and pale lemon yellow iris. It was beautiful; like
something out of the last century. Made you feel relaxed and happy just to
see (and smell!) this design.

Best Novice Design: went to Vicki Feiser, an enthusiastic new member for the
theme "Mexican Hat Dance"...this entry was dazzling, and you would never
know it was Vicki's first! It featured a very big Mexican straw hat; all
along the back were exquisite poppies in orange, pink and fushia. Each
poppy (and there were dozens) were perfect and fresh. In back of the
poppies was a beautiful stalk of a maroon magenta tall bearded with show
branching. It was bright, zingy, sensational!

We were priveledged to have six of the most astonishing classroom iris
posters ever put together from the 7th and 8th grade science classes at
Crosspoint Christian School (sponsored by our club) There were six of these
huge magnificent stand up posters containing many hours of diligent research
by these students, working in teams, on six different subjects. The posters
were three sided and four foot high each. They also each featured games or
other artifacts as well as student photos in front of each poster. The
posters were such high quality, that the judges awarded each one a blue
ribbon; but the one that got the nod for the big blue ribbon Best in Group
(not an AIS award) was Iris Hybridizing. These students will receive their
ribbons at a school award ceremony on Tuesday. Thanks to teacher Vicki
Beumer and her class for a great job and addition to our show!!

Best Youth Historic went to Mme Chereau (spelling?)

Best Youth Siberian and 1st Runnerup to Youth Queen went to Over in
Gloryland

Best Youth Median and 2nd Runnerup to Youth Queen went to the MTB Ozark
Dream.

Youth Queen of Show went to Passion Flower

Best Youth Educational went to the poster "Beardless Iris", which was not a
part of the classroom iris project.

Best Adult English Box went to Mike Theissen for his box featuring huge,
beautiful blues and blue-whites, including Silverado.

Best Adult Median went to Luella Pehle for her IB, Goddess of Pink.

Adult Queen of Show went to the youth stalk of Passion Flower. This is
probably a first for our show, with a youth taking overall queen.
Congratulations to Passion Flower!

Best Seedling, as already mentioned went to Bob Koch for his space age
seedling with very involved parentage, although it did somewhat resemble
Passion Flower.

I am sorry I did not have time to write down the Adult Historic, and 1st RU
to Queen. Mike Theissen won all of these spots, and I believe that 2nd RU
to Queen was the MTB Welch's Reward, also exhibited by Mike Theissen.

I would like to thank the judges, Irv and Nancy Polklington, and the
Hensons, (perhaps one more or one more couple?) who came all the way from
Illinois to judge our show. Without you, we would not have had a show!
There were three shows in our area all within a 75 mile radius and things
were pretty spread out. Iris folks are great! Thanks too, to our artistic
judges, all from St. Louis. These ladies were very gracious and took the
time to explain their judging to anyone who asked.

Thanks too to Carl Dennler and his church, Presbyterian Church of Washington
for letting us use their fine facilities; it was a pleasure!

Cindy Rust, Missouri
