About spading forks--many of them come with a loooong handle--which is not
too easy to use for a little (short) person-- I finally found one with a
short handle and a grip area at the end--easy to visualize but hard to
explain--since many of my Iris grow on terraces about 4 feet wide, I have
trouble using a long handled tool there--with the short handled tool, you
can stick it into the ground--if you have clay like I do, jump onto the top
of the tines and drive it into the ground, then push the handle over with
your foot, and when it is over part way, you can again jump onto the handle
and the clump will come up--much easier on your back than trying to lift
the heavy clod of dirt and Iris, and a few jumps onto the handle and most
of the dirt has fallen away from the clump--
Great way to get exercise also, and since I am on a corner, the vehicles
going by sometimes stop to watch me digging the iris--and I get many offers
of help--
If I lived somewhere where there were no rocks (I am in a glacial valley)
and the ground was nice and sandy and not clay--digging Iris would
certainly be less fun than it is now--
Carryl in western Montana--where I have over 50 MDB and SDB in bloom,
nights are about 30 and some days a few snowflakes are coming down.
