Re: TB Best Sellers and Most Popular

From: "S&C Rust" <srust@fidnet.com>

In a recent post, I wondered why Jon thought only older iris were show and
popularity winners, but I left out the world "only"...sorry! Of course, it
depends on your panel of judges, but if it is a progressive panel, they will
pick the newest iris for Queen if all else is equal between it and a, say,
15 year old variety. I have now exhibited and attended enough shows to know
that not all judges or panels of judges, think alike. This was confusing to
me at first, because I naively thought that all judges were the same. One
panel of judges we had would not consider anything "tall" for higher awards.
Another panel went right for the biggest, under the theory (I guess!) that
bigger is better. Conservative judges did not regard space age, broken
color, or even reblooming iris as worthy of more than a blue ribbon. So, I
guess, it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I may
occassionally wonder why a panel of judges placed a particular specimen
where they did, but it is usually not even necessary to ask, if they are
consistent judges, you can discover the answer for yourself by looking at
the rest of their placements. Their particular likes and dislikes are very
obvious after viewing the whole picture. I would label the panel of judges
we had this year as consistent and contemporary. It was easy to see what
they preferred, for the most part. I love the variety at shows. I am not
overly impressed by the higher winners myself, I like what I like. I happen
to really like good branching, so I always admire that quality at shows. I
like almost all colors and try to grow some of everything. I was amused
when one grower commented about my order this year that he could sure see we
went for the bright colors, when if he could have talked to another grower,
he would have been told I order almost nothing but whites! The point is, I
have seen both older and newer iris win at shows. It depends on what the
judges value most, and there are outstanding newer and older iris of all
forms and colors.
