CONV: Siberian/Species 2003

From: Irisborer@aol.com

Last night we had a planning meeting for the upcoming Y2003 Siberian and
Species convention. Now, some of you are, no doubt, scratching your head and
proclaiming us too intense to be talking about a convention that's 3-1/2
years away - but when you're hosting it, it's like it's tomorrow.

But I'm here to tell you that if it WAS tomorrow, we'd be READY!

This convention is extraordinary in that it's not just a collaboration
between two regions - 2 and 16.... but also because it's a collaboration
between two COUNTRIES. The convention will be held in Canada and is
co-sponsored by New York and Canada. It's going to be a convention like no
other, and I think you should find a way to clear your calendar now of pesky
conflicts like weddings and babies and so on.

We have an exciting 'can do' committee - with folks anxious to be part of
putting this together. We have an overall chairman - Chris Hollingshead, and
then a Canadian and US Co-Chair (Cathy Boyko and Kathy Guest). All of the
sub-category chairs are in place as well, including registration, publicity,
hotels and transportation, publications and so on and so forth.

This is the progress we made last night: We selected a slogan "2003 -
beardless and borderless", and a logo in essence (which will be the year with
a star in one zero and a maple leaf in the other - red stripes above and
below with mention of the two focuses of the convention. We will be creating
promotional items when the logo is finalized, which will be sold to offset
our planning costs.

The gardens are selected - the Royal Botanical Gardens, Canadian School of
Horticulture and a bunch of private gardens as well. We have even made plans
for lunch overlooking Niagara Falls (or what Peter calls "the water feature").

The hotel is selected (150 rooms blocked out.... don't wait when the
registration is set - we're going to sell out quick), and the buses are
booked.

Peter has already worked out arrangements to get the plants into Canada from
the US - by having a US shipping destination, from which the Ag inspector
will inspect and bless, and then consort with the Canadian Ag inspector.
Just win/win/win. We will start asking for guest plants for this fall.

There's almost nothing left to do but wait for you folks to show up.....

Kathy Guest - who loves to go to meetings where the energy level is so high -
even though she's leaving for London on Sunday and has a bazillion things to
do and has no business taking 6 hours out of her life to attend a meeting.
