I soak my TB seed for 3 days or so, changing the water daily. Last years was
rolled in peat moss (keep labels with each batch) placed in sandwich bags,
and left in the vegie section of the fridge for 8 to 12 weeks. The peat moss
was messy, so I refined this technique by wrapping each batch in a moist
paper towell. The last lot, I just laid the seeds on the moist paper towell,
rolled it, and wrapped it, with the label, in aluminium foil, and placed it
just under the freezer compartment, so it freezes lightly.
I did this, because a couple of earlier batches went mouldy. BTW I dealt
with the mould by seperating the seeds from the peat moss, and soaking them
for an hour in water with a dash of chlorine bleach. These seeds are
germinating at present, so no harm was done.
The only problem with little plastic packets in the freezer, is that you
have to make absolutely sure everyone in the family knows what they are, and
doesn't throw them out. They take up very little space, even if you are
dealing with large numbers of seed.
I hope this has given you some ideas John.
My first PCI popped it's little green head out of the peat pellet last
night. It is one of 7 Ghio seeds from a BIS batch, given to me by a friend.
(I'm going to talk to it every day. :-))
My bearded seedlings are getting beyond the counting daily stage, and I have
at least one of every cross emerged, from the first 12 crosses, which
include several IBXIB, IBXTB, and IBXSDB's. Very exciting. (for me) 8 more
crosses planted a couple of weeks ago, and some pumilla and pseudo pumilla
seeds in the freezer.
Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia, thoroughly hooked on irises!
