HIST: Wm. A. Setchell

From: Bill Shear <BILLS@hsc.edu>

For some reason, the old TB 'William A. Setchell," a very large violet
bitone, has stuck in my mind since I first grew it back in the mid-50s (and
it was an old variety then). I saw it again, nicely grown, at the OKC
convention.

Now today, while going through a pile of old issues of AMERICAN ZOOLOGIST,
I spotted a photograph of researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute in 1894. And there, on the far left, was a figure indentified as
William A. Setchell! He appeared to be in his late 30s when the photo was
taken.

So is this the 'real' William A. Setchell? And if so, what was his
connection to irises? What kind of biological research did he do? The
article (on the history of the American Society of Zoologists) did not
mention him; he only appears in this single photograph.
