spotting due to a virus may not affect you next year at all. One of the
most notoriously susceptible to that is MING DYNASTY, a rich gold that may get
dark brown to black spots. Personally, I find them attractive, but that's
beside the point. I can testify that some years (this seems to be one)
there is little or no spotting at all. So the virus may not go away, but
you do not always have its effects.
