Re: HYB: Species and Median crosses

From: "S&C Rust" <srust@fidnet.com>

Several of you on this list have been very helpful to Stephanie with her
goal of producing MTBs that have aril traits and rebloom. Thought you would
like to know that she has gotten a lot of good seed set this season (which
is very nearly over for us). One of the species we were advised to use is
I. aphylla. Jim Loveland made it possible for us to have copious amounts of
pollen from two different aphylla species; one a taller, blue self. The
other looked like a yellow ground with light blue flecking to my eye; but it
photographed light blue with blue flecking. (?!) It was shorter, but both
bloomed in nice clumps. We had more of the blue and used it on a variety of
things. We have pods from the blue aphylla pollen on the following:
Eternal Bliss (small tall rebloomer), Twice Delightful (TB rebloomer),
Starlit Velvet (blackish with white spray pattern TB), Precious Little Pink
(IB rebloomer) Constant Companion (blue IB rebloomer) and Protocol (yellow
amoena IB). With the yellow aphylla with flecking pollen we got a big pod
on the gracefully branched TB, Ruffled Skirts. Also got a pod on Mellow
Fellow (BB) and Apricot Drops (MTB). Other hybridizing efforts of interest
to some on this list produced pods on the following: Misty Lady x Absalom's
Treachery (OGB)---three really big pods; Blue Arts (OGB+) x Flea Circus
(MDB); Constant Companion x Precious Little Pink (this is an IB x IB cross
as well as rebloom x rebloom cross!); Apricot Drops x Precious Little Pink
(MTB x IB rebloom); Precious Little Pink x Tropical Sunset (IB rebloom x
OGB); Apricot Drops x Tropical Sunset (MTB x OGB); Apricot Drops x Absalom's
Treachery (MTB x OGB); Buckwheat x Fancy Woman (pollen donated by Jim
Loveland, again!); Crystal Ruffles x Andromache (diploid MTB x diploid aril;
small pod); Payoff x Andromache (tet MTB x diploid aril; small pod); Payoff
x Tropical Sunset (tet MTB x OGB); Crystal Ruffles x Bonus Mama (dip MTB x
reblooming TB tet); Honey Glazed x Belvi Queen (IB rebloom x TB rebloom);
Protocol x Eternal Bliss (IB amoena x small tall rebloomer  big pod!);
Abridged Version x Apricot Frosty (tet MTB x IB); Tranquil Beauty x Syrian
Princess (small pink amoena TB x OGB); Cyber Net x Andromache (broken color
MTB x dip aril--small pods); Steffie x Absalom's Treachery (MTB
dip/tet/mixed? x OGB); Rich In Spirit x Absalom's Treachery (small bicolor
TB x OGB); Pretty Quirky x Bewilderbeast (dip MTB x broken color tet TB);
Bimini x Ozark Dream (great form BB x tet MTB), and Cyber Net x
Bewilderbeast (dip broken color MTB x tet b/c TB).

There are many other crosses, but these are a few in our wide crosses that
represent fertile IBs, aphylla crossing, and trying to use MTBs with other
classes. The arilbred pollen has been wildly successful. The only
arilbreds that set seed themselves here were Syrian Princess (x Belvi Queen)
and Blue Arts (x Flea Circus MDB). Unfortunately, our seed set on
Andromache shriveled to nothing, and all of the pods we got with its pollen
are very small. But, we were told to expect that, because it is a diploid.
We are really hoping for a few viable seeds from it. Thank all of you on
this list who did so much to help Stephanie with her hybridizing efforts
this year, with advise, pollen and plants!
