I believe that the material Patricia describes is what
I call 'landscape fabric' and use on landscaping jobs
underneath mulch to inhibit growth of weeds.  It lets
moisture through but helps to stop the weeds.  I
particularly use it where we have removed grass and
want to grow other things.  You punch holes in it just
big enough to put plants in.  I've had no experience
using it for irises.
