When I did a search of the Mallorn Archives, I got 176 hits on 'stocks,' going way back to the beginning of old iris-l.
Why has the use of this word suddenly become a problem? We know what we are talking about.
We have nearly seven hundred members on this list and less than five
per cent post? Why? Some are afraid the grammar posse will get them if they
make a mistake in spelling, usage, or whatever. We are supposed to be here
for our interest in irises, not correcting each other's use of language. Please
correct me if I am wrong.
The sources on the usage of 'stock' have not been exhausted, and I am sure each
of us can find one that will support or refute one usage or another.
I am happy to have contributed to the 'bs' in this context and am now willing to
just let it go away (I hope).
