I can't resist - this thread has been humor for the week. Bill Shear,
who usually signs name, rank, serial number and a quote, signed his post
with just B.S. Then someone mentioned "foreigners" & I wonder who the
foreigners are in cyberspace <g>.
So I had to dig out Onion's English Dictionary of Etymology (published
in Oxford, England) to see what some of the 'foreigners' had to say
about the word <stock>. First definition - trunk or stem.
Then I got out my Taylor's Encyclopedia of Gardening (American), which
doesn't define stock (other than breeding stock & stocks, the flower).
Taylor's says we shouldn't be calling it a stalk at all - the flower
stalk should be properly called a pedicel, peduncle, or, in the case of
iris (I think), a scape.
I will surely regret posting this when messages become >70% chat, it
gets my goat, and I can see the future - something about scapegoats....
