I drove by the display garden at Natcher School (sponsored, planted, and
tended by Southern Kentucky Iris Society) this afternoon to see if any of the
rebloom had survived/recovered. The existing rebloom was wiped out in the
freeze a couple of weeks (?) ago, but there was new growth on several of the
clumps. Actually, there was a rather large stock of new stalks. <g>
(couldn't resist!) ;-)
AFTERNOON DELIGHT was showing off with a couple of stalks, but no blooms yet.
Unfortunately, we have another cold spell on the horizon.
I also paid a visit to my 2000 seedlings that live "out in the country."
Some were doing real well and others were not doing real well. (;-)) While
searching for strong plants with indications of spring bloom, I found two
stalks. I have planted a lot of seed with nearly 75% having rebloom
potential, many produced rebloomers, and I have NEVER had seedlings try to
bloom the first fall. So indulge me!
I love red on yellow plicatas and HOT STREAK is one of my favorites.
9525-1RE, on the rebloom report for the Botanical Garden in Memphis this
fall, is EARL OF ESSEX X HOT STREAK, a cross made with borrowed pollen. I
couldn't wait to get HS established and reverse the cross. My theory, or
hope, being that I could produce a bloom like HS, with it's height and
branching, while capturing the rebloom gene from EOE. In 2000, I made the
cross HOT STREAK X EARL OF ESSEX, another cross made with borrowed pollen! I
lined out about 60 seedlings from this cross. It has produced many strong,
fast growing plants. Several have little second generation increases. About
halfway down one row, one of the strongest (plant or clump) had a stalk about
12 inches tall. It will not open it's bloom due to the lateness of the
season, but think of the possibilities. And I've all winter to dream!
In 1996 (I think) I registered an iris as LOVE LINES, but I've not introduced
it. In 2000, I crossed this with pollen from CLARENCE. It produced strong
plants, and, again, I found a stalk. This one is barely through the fan.
Again, it will not open a bloom. LOVE LINES is LATEST STYLE X GLISTENING
ICICLE. LL has white standards and pale blue falls with two or three deep
blue mid lines below the beard on the falls.
Oh, and I also found a (1) new seed up in one of my pots held over from
spring. Seems to be a seasonal thing.
