Rob, I wouldn't say "have to" because rebloom seems to be a dominant trait.
At least around my place. Like most traits, your chance of success is
greater with two rebloomers. The same would be the case if you're breeding
for lace, bud count, good foliage, etc. Most of my crosses have been STRONG
REBLOOMER X SPORADIC REBLOOMER (or the reverse). I thought I'd found one in
my records that didn't follow this pattern, but when I went to the cumulative
check list of reblooming iris, even LACED COTTON has rebloomed in Holland.
So, once again LACED COTTON X FEEDBACK follows this pattern. With two open
blooms it beat the freeze due tonight.

Maybe GALLANT MOMENT X FEEDBACK would fit the bill since I can't find GM
listed in the list. However, I sent several long winters doing research in
the mid-eighties and I'm fairly sure I found rebloom in the parentage or it's
unlikely I would have used it. I did get addicted to making crosses at the
end of some seasons and used non-reblooming irises, but GM is an early
bloomer. (Wild Ginger is in the parentage & in the list)

My biggest challenge has been the classes where there weren't many or any
strong reblooming irises. For instance, red & black. I've bred out to
purple, using FEEDBACK, VIOLET MIRACLE, VIOLET CLASSIC, AND VIOLET RETURNS.
It's muddied the colors in some case, but I expect some beautiful things in
future generations.

In the falls of 85 & 86, INFERNO tried to rebloom, but in each case it didn't
open before an early frost. Unfortunately, INFERNO turned out to be one of
those irises that only produce pollen every 3-4 years. I waited about that
long, but suddenly one spring (91) is was loaded with pollen. I crossed it
onto HER ROYAL HIGHNESS by Monty Byers. Later, I crossed two siblings from
this cross. I saved three of the seedling to bring here. Two, including the
best, have rebloomed. This year I crossed BLACKOUT (another CA rebloomer)
onto the best seedling. Blacks are difficult, but we'll have to wait and
see. Oh, yes, the UGLY seedling is a sooty red black. It just has bad form.

I try to hold out for rebloom when using my own seedling, but even this
doesn't always work. I've a lovely pink seedling from PRESENCE X PINK
ATTRACTION that I can't seem to beg a rebloom stalk out of and I hope to
cross it to another reblooming pink to take this a step further. (PARADISE
is the CA rebloomer in PRESENCE that I bred to)

This year I added CHINESE NEW YEAR, VISITING ROYALTY, DOUBLE VISION, SILK
BROCADE, and others to my lines, just so you don't think I'm totally behind
the times! SB may qualify as a non-rebloomer but I doubt it.

I've really been amazed at the seedlings that have bloomed this fall. They
must love the sunshine from where the neighbor cut down all the trees! And
all that rain this year.
