I was successful with Watsonias in Gainesville for a few years. I treated
them like gladioli, but in reverse--planting in the fall and digging them up
in the spring when the leaves yellowed. Watsonias are good container
plants, too, which is how I grow them now. Start them up in the fall for
spring bloom, then dry them off in the summer. Watsonias are popular yard
and container plants in California, where the rainfall regime fits their
natural inclinations.
If you don't know them, Watsonias are gladiolus-like plants that grow from
corms. They range from 1-5 ft. tall, depending on the species or variety.
The blooms range from white to deep red and look like more tubular or
bell-shaped glads. The large species have branched spikes.
