Folks,
Several folks have contacted me offline regarding the AIS Bulletin Index
I posted about earlier. (http://www.magpage.com/~gsis/ais-index.html) So
I would like to add a few comments to clarify what this index is and
just in case anyone is considering helping with it (THANKS!)...
The index is a bit more than just a table of contents. In addition to
listing the articles, it includes an index entry for each inidividual,
color, iris photo. And for each article, if the title and/or subtopic
don't describe the contents well, additional keywords are put in a
description entry. Plus the author's name, which surprisingly, can be
very difficult to find for some articles!
The intent, I believe, was to make the index searchable for things that
people would normally look for. Like everything written by a specific
hybridizer or every reference to a particular variety of iris.
However, this makes the job a tad bit more time consuming than you might
think. I found I was often distracted into reading old articles so what
would have taken around 20 minutes per, often took an hour or more. If
you are considering contributing, please take a look at the existing
index to see what data is there. Then try doing an issue.
Even if you can only do one issue, every little bit helps. Janet
Hueller, who did such a great amount of the existing indexing, reminded
me that this was indeed, an excellent winter hobby!
