HI
Just coming up for air, we've got most of our spring shows finished.
It's been the latest bloom season I can remember. Sneak Preview which normally starts bloomimg first week of Oct was only just out for the Iris Show 26-27th Oct. Instead of scratching to find any Dutch Iris to show, it was a question of which were out yet. Overall our Iris Show was good but certainly overall bloom numbers were down. The grand champion was About Town. We've just peaked on TB bloom now.
The following week we had the Adelaide Rose Festival. This was the second time this has been held (every 2 years over 4 days) and lots of people who had bought their first iris 2 years ago came back and bought 2 -4 more. It's so encouraging to hear people say how much pleasure they get from their irises. I spent most of my time digging, while Les did the selling. We had to restock many lines every day. By Sat I was despairing of what I could find that we could sell for Sunday, that was blooming and we had enough stock to dig. We no longer have vast stocks of Jesse's Song, which was the most popular, as it was last time. Apart from Jesse's Song the hit colour was sky blue. Which was just as well, as hardly any yellows or pinks were out at then. We had a mocked up garden of irises, roses and flowering apples so everyone could see exactly what they were buying.
Unfortunately the La and Sp were as late as everything else, and so there was almost no blooms of those. I'm glad it's only every two years. Although I had a week leave from my job, we still worked 18 hours a day.
We should have TB bloom going right through to early Dec this year. The Spuria and Sib have only just started to come out now.
Not sure if it is connected with the very late season, but the colour intensity, esp pink and orange is the best I've ever seen it. Orange Slices is looking stunning. Although some blues seem a bit lighter than usual.
Just having a chance to get some photo's onto the computer, so will post some as available.
Overall the weather is still fairly cool and dry although we're starting to get a few hot days. We'll have a dry season but we're nowhere near as drought affected as eastern Aust. They had a very hot dry summer last year and it's looking worse for this year, the bush fires aroung Sydney have started already.
